ICYMI: Lucas - Democrats Should Stop Trying To Obstruct Gorsuch Confirmation
For nearly a year, only eight justices have served on the U.S. Supreme Court. Now, President Donald Trump has nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to carry on Justice Antonin Scalia's legacy of original intent for our Constitution.
The choice of Judge Gorsuch both fulfills President Trump's promise to put a mainstream jurist on the court and reaffirms his commitment to honor the American people who entrusted him with this solemn responsibility.
This country has waited long enough for this seat to be filled. It's time to have nine justices on the Supreme Court again. Judge Gorsuch is the mainstream conservative to do just that and ensure common sense emanates from this highest court again.
Gorsuch graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University in three years. He earned a Truman Scholarship to help pay for Harvard Law School, where he graduated cum laude. He received a doctorate from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar. This Coloradoan's academic credentials have no peer.
His professional resume is equally impressive. Judge Gorsuch started his career clerking for Judge David Sentelle and Justices Byron White and Anthony Kennedy. In 2006, President George Bush nominated Judge Gorsuch to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, where he was confirmed by voice vote without objection.
Even Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer supported Judge Gorsuch's nomination. At that time, Senate Democrats called him "a very talented, gifted judge," "very ethical," "very smart," and "thoughtful and fair-minded."
Top Senate Democrats supported Judge Gorsuch in 2006. Why now do they seem laser-focused on obstructing his confirmation process, just as they have done with every one of President Trump's cabinet nominees?
West Virginians elected President Trump to nominate a Supreme Court justice of the highest integrity to champion our nation's Constitution. Yet, Sen. Joe Manchin's colleagues would rather put politics before the American people. It's not enough for Senator Manchin to say his fellow Democrats are wrong. Manchin must see that Senate Democrats confirm Judge Gorsuch's nomination to the Supreme Court after allowing for a swift and fair hearing.
If Senator Manchin chooses any other course of action, he forsakes the will of the West Virginians who sent him to Washington to represent their interests.
Judge Gorsuch is universally respected for his fairness and integrity. Even liberal commentator Rachel Maddow has called him a relatively "mainstream choice." As a jurist, Judge Gorsuch believes judges should base their decisions on the law and Constitution, not on their own policy preferences. He's also a proponent of "originalism," believing that jurists should adhere to the Founders' original intent of the Constitution.
An ardent defender of religious liberty for all faiths, limited government and the proper role of the courts, Judge Gorsuch's judicial record consistently reflects his commitment to uphold the law. He understands the role of the states granted by the Constitution and has faithfully applied the law in criminal matters.
Millions of Americans - many of them West Virginians - cast their vote on Nov. 8 based solely on the future direction of the Supreme Court. President Trump now honors their wishes and it is time Senator Manchin and the Senate do the same.
Support Judge Neil Gorsuch.
